Fun with foraging

We are offering two foraging sessions in the grounds of Ugbrooke House as part of our Family Fun Day on Sunday 27th April.

Foraging, the practice of gathering wild, edible plants, fruits, and fungi, is gaining popularity due to a desire for sustainable food sources, a connection with nature, and a way to experience the bounty of the natural world.

The sessions at Ugbrooke Park will be led by Colin Wheeler-James of Ground-Up Cookery School. With over 30 years of experience as a professional chef, Colin is an industry leader in foraging, fermentation, and zero waste. He regularly trains and presents to chefs, advocating for sustainable catering practices on a large scale. Colin currently serves as a development chef for a major distributor in the manufacturing industry, covering Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, while also owning and operating Ground Up Cookery School.

“We’re delighted that Colin has agreed to lead these sessions;” said Donna Cook, Chair of Trustees for Cancer Lifeline South West, “he’s an expert in his field and the participants are in for a real treat.”

Sessions will start at 1pm and 2pm, each of 30 minutes duration, and places are restricted to 16 in each group. There will be a charge of £3 per person. Pre-booking is essential and can be done via the event page, although you won’t have to pay for your tickets until you arrive.

Since its founding in 2002, CLSW has provided therapeutic ‘Time to Retune’ breaks for people who have completed cancer treatment, along with their primary carers. These breaks offer a much-needed opportunity to process their experience and start looking to the future. This support is provided free of charge, and with no public funding, so the charity relies on fundraising, sponsorship, and donations. It hopes to increase the number of breaks it can offer each year, hence the fundraising push.

The Family Fun Day will take place in the beautiful grounds of Ugbrooke House, near Newton Abbot, and promises a packed programme of activities for all ages. Visitors can look forward to a dog show, live music, exciting sports demonstrations, and taster sessions, along with plenty of surprises throughout the day. Taking place at the end of the Easter holidays and the start of the spring and summer season, the event is expected to attract guests from across the south west.
