Ball Skills With A Rugby Legend

Youngsters will have a chance to practise their ball skills under the keen eye of a rugby legend, Don Armand, in the grounds of Ugbrooke House as part of our Family Fun Day on Sunday 27th April.

CLSW Patron Don Armand had a 13 year professional career, playing rugby both internationally and for top tier teams such as Stormers in South Africa, and Exeter Chiefs in England. He captained the Chiefs many times and won two caps for England. He was recognised as one of the top players in the premiership over several seasons and this was because of his exemplary performance, his on-field gravitas and the effect he had on others in the team as an established leader.

Don will be running two sessions in ball skills during the Family Fun Day, one for Under-10s and one for 10-16 year olds.

“The fun skill sessions I will be doing should be a great way to help some future budding rugby players learn things that they know are important at the top level,” said Don. “It’s great to be able to take the kids outside of their usual environments and teach them all the basics around rugby, be it ball skills or team skills, all of which are important both in sport and in life.”
And as a parent himself, he was obviously speaking from experience when he added: “and exhausting them of all their extra energy should go down for their parents as well!”

The session for Under-10s will start at 12.15pm. The one for 10-16 year olds will start at 1.45pm. Each will last for one hour and places in each group will be limited to a maximum of 30. There will be a charge of £5 per person. Pre-booking and prepayment is essential and can be done via the booking page.

Since its founding in 2002, CLSW has provided therapeutic ‘Time to Retune’ breaks for people who have completed cancer treatment, along with their primary carers. These breaks offer a much-needed opportunity to process their experience and start looking to the future. This support is provided free of charge, and with no public funding, so the charity relies on fundraising, sponsorship, and donations. It hopes to increase the number of breaks it can offer each year, hence the fundraising push.

The Family Fun Day will take place in the beautiful grounds of Ugbrooke House, near Newton Abbot, and promises a packed programme of activities for all ages. Visitors can look forward to a dog show, live music, exciting sports demonstrations, and taster sessions, along with plenty of surprises throughout the day. Taking place at the end of the Easter holidays and the start of the spring and summer season, the event is expected to attract guests from across the south west.
